On the morning of June 16th, the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival’s Short Film Section (赌博app EXPLORE) revealed the 20 selected works, with 6 receiving special recommendations from jury members. At the event, director Tan Chui Mui, Dong Yue, and Chen Liaoyu, screenwriter Chen Shu, and Zhang Shuguang, the Chief Editor of Operations at China Mobile Migu (Shanghai) Co., Ltd, all serving as jury members for 赌博app EXPLORE, convened for a discussion revolving around the theme “Exploring the Myriad Aspects of Life Through Micro-Cinematography”. The jury members unanimously expressed that creating a short film isn’t easier than creating a feature film; it requires the most unique expression within a restricted timeframe. Even though AI’s new technology can bring unlimited possibilities for professional creators, human imagination can never be replaced.
Brave Experimentation and Innovation by the New Generation of Creators
Since the establishment of 赌博app EXPLORE in 2019, every year’s call for submissions has received widespread participation and eager entries from video filming enthusiasts. This year, close to 3,900 works were submitted for consideration. Even though each piece is short and compact, they all embody the creator’s sincere expression and represent the new generation of creators’ audacious attempts and courageous innovations in their pursuit of cinematic expression. After rigorous selection, 20 excellent works stood out, with 6 garnering special recommendations from the jury members.
Jury members of 赌博app EXPLORE subsequently announced the honored works: BEING SISYPHUS FOR ONE SECOND A DAY was awarded the “ Exploratory Spirit Honor”, WIND WILD received the “Best Production Honor”, THE LOST COURIER received the “Best Animation Honor”, OH, MY MOM! won the “Best Feature Honor”, THE NAME OF THE PLUM BLOSSOM received the “Best Director Honor”, and THE GREAT CONNECTION was given the “Special Recommended Honor from the Jury Members”.
Additionally, three awards were announced on site. CHINA’S VOICE AT THE WINTER OLYMPICS won the “Migu’s Special Attention Honor”, SEE YOU YESTERDAY won the “Migu’s Best VR Work”, and “Ancient Book Tour Diary” won “Migu’s Best Immersive Experience Honor”.

Presenting the Most Unique Part Within a Limited Time
Owing to time constraints, it’s not easy for short video images to clearly narrate a story in a short period. Dong Yue, who was nominated for Best Director at the Golden Rooster Awards in 2019 for his crime mystery film THE LOOMING STORM, believes that the biggest challenge short video images present to creators is how to mobilize their existing resources to “capture the audience’s attention” within the specified time. “Feature-length films have resources from various angles to support creators, but short films can’t easily achieve this. The creator needs to fully utilize their strengths, present their most unique part, and resonate with the audience.”
In contrast to feature film creation, the narrative dimension and rule system of short films are fundamentally different. “Back in school, we had to submit short film assignments for audiovisual language classes, which were extremely valuable from a professional training perspective,” said Chen Shu, the screenwriter of the film series BROTHERHOOD OF BLADES. “Short films need to have complete work attributes. The requirement for creators to tell a story and convey emotional viewpoints in a short span is higher.”
Looking over the short video entries for this session, animated works make up a significant portion. “The technical threshold for animation is slightly more complex, and it serves as a filter that can eliminate some works,” explained Chen Liaoyu, the general director of YAO-CHINESE FOLKTALES. The creation of short video images is often an individualized process that requires professional technical training. “In the future, we hope that short video images will demonstrate more open, diverse, bold, and groundbreaking attempts.”
If written text allows people to grasp information immediately, the instant imagery of short videos can “immerse” viewers in the scene. In the view of Zhang Shuguang, the Chief Editor at China Mobile’s Migu (Shanghai) Co., Ltd, the core of short video content that can attract viewership lies in eliciting resonance. “Short video images and long videos have no difference in artistic expression. The biggest difference lies in the scenarios where users accept the output. The mobile screen is private, and its transmission experience is a one-on-one personalized transmission, which is different from a one-to-many transmission.”
AI Technology Offers Infinite Possibilities to Creators
With the influences of technology, market, and user needs, the future forms and content expressions of short video images are also changing. This year, the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), such as ChatGpt, has quickly caused a shock within the industry, and some insiders even predict that a film completely produced by AI might emerge in the next two years.
Director Tan Chui Mui is actively trying out this brand-new technological revolution. She designs scenes and makes characters move with popular AI software, resulting in a final product that doesn’t betray any signs of computer synthesis. “If there is future authorization of actors’ portrait rights, you can let actors appear in the film with just a simple instruction. Any scene, shot, or lighting can be accomplished then,” she explained. Filmmakers won’t need a huge budget; they can make a film using this tool. But is such technology truly beneficial to creators? In her opinion, this is a new revolution for the entire industry. “Film art cannot be separated from the progress of technology. When new technologies emerge, creators can focus more on how to express their content.”
Zhang Shuguang also believes that new technology will bring “infinite possibilities”. “Traditional means of expression are more of a projection of reality, but the most beautiful things are always in our aspiration, and new technology can make this possible. If creators make good use of these tools, our professional creation will take a step further.”
However, Director Dong Yue indicated that AI technology cannot replace human imagination. Using the short video entries of this session as an example, he noted that these creators all have their own pursuits and imaginations, and they all express and explore the language of imagery.
赌博app EXPLORE has received strong support from its official strategic partner, China Mobile Migu, the official video ringtone partner, China Mobile Video Ringtone, the exclusive educational support unit, Shanghai Vancouver Film School, and the official cooperative partner, Bilibili Film Channel.
