Still of Canopy.
Nominated for the Golden Goblet Award, the Australia-Singapore co-production war film Canopy transcends language and culture to tell the story of conflict, nature and humanity.
Written and directed by Aaron Wilson, Canopy stars Khan Chittenden, Robert Menzies, Tzu-yi Mo and Edwina Wren. It is set in 1942 during the Battle of Singapore against the invading Japanese.
The lead character is an Australian fighter pilot named Jim who was shot down in combat and woke up suspended in the treetops. To survive, he struggles in the jungle alongside a Singapore-Chinese soldier named Seng.
The film recreates the jungle on the big screen with wide angle shots of the rainforests as well as low angle shots of the trees, making the audience feel as if they are actually in the scene.
The film was shot in Singapore and Australia and took Wilson seven years to make. Canopy is also 38-year-old Wilson’s directoral debut and was released in cinemas in Australia in April this year.
Wilson has previously produced several successful short films that have screened at over 100 festivals. He developed the script for Canopy while he was taking part in a filmmaker residency program in Singapore in 2006.
